The very first 7-Eleven store opened in Thailand on 1 June 1989 on Patpong Road in Bangkok. These days there seems to be convenience stores on every corner in Thailand. In fact, at the end of 2012, there were 12,246 stores nationwide with 7-Eleven operating about 69% of these. At the moment they have about 7,000 stores with plans to open another 550 this year. By 2018, it is estimated that there will be 10,000 7-Eleven stores in Thailand.
Many Americans are shocked on their first visit to Thailand to see this American convenience store here. They are further shocked to see how many there are! Sometimes there may be two located across the street from each other.
Convenience stores in the U.S. have a reputation for being dirty and over-priced. Not so here. They are usually clean, cheap and efficient.
As a traveler, they are a great place to get a bottle of water, toothpaste or a snack.
They are also usually have one or more ATM’s out front.
Travel tip: looking for a ATM? Find a 7-Eleven.
